PRE-EXISTING CONDITION LIMITATIONS1
Pre-Existing Conditions Are Not Covered For 6 Months2
Pre-existing Conditions are covered after this policy has been in force for 6 months.2 "Pre-Existing Condition" means a condition for which medical advice was given or treatment was recommended by or received from a physician within 6 months2 before the effective date of coverage.
If, as of the date of application, you had a Continuous Period of Creditable Coverage or had prior coverage under a Medicare Supplement policy for at least 6 months2, we will not exclude benefits based on a pre-existing condition. What is Medicare Supplement Insurance?
Medicare Supplement Insurance, sometimes referred to as "Medigap" insurance helps fill "gaps" in Original Medicare and is sold by private companies. Original Medicare pays for much, but not all, of the cost for covered health care services and supplies. A Medicare Supplement Insurance policy can help pay some of the remaining health care costs, like:
- Copayments
- Coinsurance
- Deductibles
What Do I Pay for Coverage?
Monthly Premium
A monthly premium is the fee you pay to the plan in exchange for coverage. Each Medicare Supplement plan has a different monthly premium. Monthly premiums also vary by your age, location and your underwriting class (if applicable). A household discount is available for eligible applicants.
When Can I Apply For Medicare Supplement Insurance?
Inside open enrollment period
Your open enrollment period starts the first day of the month in which you are enrolled in Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) and age 65 or older.
Medigap insurance companies are generally allowed to use medical underwriting to decide whether to accept your application and how much to charge you for the policy. However, even if you have health problems, during your open enrollment period you can buy any policy the company sells for the same price as people with good health.
Outside open enrollment period
If you apply for Medicare Supplement insurance coverage after your open enrollment period, there's no guarantee that an insurance company will sell you a policy if you don't meet the medical underwriting requirements. You may also be able to purchase Medicare Supplement insurance if you are under age 65 and are eligible for Medicare because of a disability or End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), or you have a guaranteed issue right.
Important Notice: In the following states, all Medicare Supplement plans are available to persons eligible for Medicare because of disability: Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Montana, South Dakota, Tennessee.
